Performance evaluation of laryngeal motion measurement using a short-range RGB-D camera

(in English) To prevent aspiration pneumonia and other swallowing disorders, it is important to monitor swallowing function on a daily basis using a simple method. In this paper, we evaluate the applicability of laryngeal motion measurement using an RGB-D camera, a non-contact sensor. We simultaneously captured a video with the camera during video fluoroscopic examination and compared the laryngeal motion measured from both the X-ray and camera videos. After proper alignment of both video frames, skin irregularities along the central axis of the larynx were extracted as contours (point cloud). The obtained contour shape had a maximum error of 1.82 mm and a minimum of 0.88 mm. The results suggest the possibility of measuring laryngeal motion using the RGB-D camera.
