Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In the current electronic device market, where compact and lightweight designs are highly desired, the miniaturization of camera modules remains a significant challenge. Conventional optical lenses achieve focus adjustment by moving solid lenses along the optical axis, which requires multiple lenses and mechanical moving parts. However, such structures hinder the overall miniaturization of the modules. In this report, we proposed a novel optical lens that enable focal control by generating swirling flow in liquid via ultrasonic traveling waves, which deforms the liquid surface into a concave shape. The lens consists of an annular piezoelectric ultrasound transducer, an aluminum cylinder, and an inner liquid. It was observed that the flexural traveling wave of the cylinder in the circumferential direction induced a swirling flow, which resulted in the concave lens function. The transmitted light intensity distribution varied with changes in the applied voltage to the transducer, suggesting the existence of an optimal range of applied voltages for lens shape control.
