Performance evaluation of direction finding antenna for LASS-D

(in English) A Local Area Surveillance System (LASS) that combines passive secondary surveillance radars as reply signal receivers with an interrogator is well-suited for aircraft surveillance in small areas with low air traffic. It has been demonstrated that, when one receiver in the LASS is equipped with direction-finding capabilities of estimating the direction of arrival of the reply signal from the transponder, it can be configured as a system using a single interrogator and receiver.

In this paper, we present the configuration of the LASS-D, which includes one receiver equipped with a direction-finding antenna array. Additionally, the performance evaluation results for the antenna in an anechoic chamber experiment are provided. In this experiment, a continuous wave was used as the pseudo-reply signal. The results demonstrated that, for a single-wave incidence, direction finding is possible with a positioning error of approximately $pm 1^circ$ in standard deviation.
