Room volume estimation is critical for applications in acoustic engineering, architectural acoustics, and emergency response. Traditional techniques, such as those based on the Sabine equation, face significant limitations due to the challenges of precisely measuring absorption coefficients blindly. This study proposes a method for blind room volume estimation using reverberant speech, leveraging the modulation transfer function (MTF). Our approach employs a seven-octave band filterbank to process reverberant speech, extracting temporal amplitude envelopes to generate MTF features. These features are then fed into a convolutional neural network (CNN) for volume estimation. Experimental evaluations on real-world and simulated room impulse responses validate the method’s effectiveness, achieving a mean square error of 0.14 in volume estimation and a mean absolute logarithmic ratio of 1.15 between estimated and ground truth volumes. Our approach significantly enhances accuracy and robustness compared to baseline methods, addressing scenarios where direct measurement is impractical. This innovative solution offers broad potential applications, including security monitoring, space management, and emergency evacuation planning. |
