Quantitative Evaluation of Active Motor Units Using a Single-Channel Surface EMG Signal

(in English) Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals are valuable for directly and electrically capturing muscle activity during motion. An sEMG signal consists of superimposed waveforms generated by the firings of individual motor units. Since muscle activity reflects the collective behavior of discrete motor unit activities, understanding the number and timing of active motor units is critical for analyzing muscle states and dynamics. However, conventional techniques cannot directly extract motor unit activities from an sEMG signal; instead, they rely on analyzing the signal's amplitude or frequency characteristics. In our previous research, we proposed a method to detect motor unit action potentials using a single-channel sEMG signal. Building on this foundation, this study quantitatively evaluates the firing frequencies and synchronization levels of motor units to analyze muscle states and activities.
