Numerical analysis of structural coloration of nacre by crystal super multilayers

(in English) The structural coloration of nacre is due to multilayer interference of nacre, which composed of alternating multilayers of conchiolin and hundreds to thousands of aragonite crystals. In this paper, the structural coloration of nacre by super multilayers having an extremely large number of layers in dark-colored pearls are numerically analyzed. The periodic relative permittivity tensor of super multilayer is expanded in terms of Fourier series, and the Maxwell's equations are solved by the matrix eigenvalues method. The chromatic coordinates in standard red-green-blue (sRGB) color space are calculated from the reflection spectrums, and the effects of the c-axis tilt in crystals on coloration are investigated.
