This report presents a new design method of realizing high aperture efficiency and desired radiation characteristics of circularly polarized folded reflectarray antennas composed of a circular polarization selective surface (CPSS) and a reflectarray (RA). Effects of the discrete CPSS and RA elements are considered in the proposed method. The reflection-phase distribution of the CPSS expressed using a polynomial is determined to optimize the objective function for the directivity. High aperture efficiency of 76.8% is observed at the design frequency of 18.95 GHz in full-wave simulation of a folded reflectarray antenna having the reflection-phase distribution optimized to maximize the directivity. It is also shown that high aperture efficiency of 65.4% is realized while keeping the sidelobe levels (SLLs) below $-20$ dB. |
