Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) There is a phenomenon where the intake of substances that do not have physiological effects influences cognitive function, and it is believed to occur through the activation of schemas and the accompanying generation of emotions. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between pupil dilation as an indicator of emotional arousal and reaction time in a Simple Reaction Time (SRT) task to investigate whether schema activation generates emotions or whether the emergence of emotions is related to task performance. Olfactory stimuli were used to activate the schema. The results of the experiment showed weak and moderate negative correlations between pupil diameter and reaction time under certain conditions involving olfactory stimuli, although the correlations themselves were not significant. However, since a tendency was observed where reaction time was shorter when pupil dilation occurred in the presence of olfactory stimuli, it is suggested that in this study, schema activation led to the emergence of emotions, and the type and intensity of these emotions influenced both pupil diameter and reaction time.
