Patients with Parkinson's disease manifest a symptom known as freezing of gait that prevents patients from stepping forward while walking. External auditory/visual cues have been used as a countermeasure for this symptom, however, it is problematic because it increases gait variability, which is associated with falls. Self-generated cues, in which patients generate their rhythm rather than external cues, reduce the gait variability. In this study, we hypothesized that training the sense of rhythm in self-generated cues would improve the accuracy of the sense of rhythm and prediction in timing resulting in the reduction of gait variability. Our results suggest that rhythm training enhances the ability to reflect rhythmic sensation in gait, however it does not reduce gait variability. |
