[Invited Talk] Lossless Coding for Individual Sequences: Now and Then
Tomohiko Uyematsu (Science Tokyo) IT2024-38 SIP2024-77 RCS2024-221
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The problem of encoding a given semi-infinite sequence is called as the coding problem for individual sequences. In this paper, we first explain the coding problem for individual sequences investigated by Ziv et al. in 1970s. We show some information measures of individual sequences that characterize the minimum coding rate for the following two kinds of fixed-length coding, (1) the error-free fixed-length coding, and (2) the fixed-length coding for which the error rate vanishes as the block length tends to infinity. On the other hand, for the variable-length coding, we show that the minimum code length per symbol corresponds to the complexity of the individual sequence and that this lower bound can be achieved by the LZ78 code. Next, we explain some new information measures for individual sequences obtained by us since 2000s. We then clarify the new information measures of individual sequences that coincide with the minimum coding rate of the fixed-length coding for which the error rate vanishes. Further, by using these new information measures, we construct fixed-length codes of which the encoding complexity is significantly smaller than the codes proposed by Ziv et al. Finally, we also present a information measure for individual sequences that coincide with the minimum code length per symbol for variable-length coding of individual sequences, and mention the conditions under which a set of individual sequences on a countably infinite alphabet can be universally encoded.
