This paper provides an overview of the current progress in the development of millimeter-wave sensors. Millimeter-wave sensors show great promise in applications such as monitoring human health by detecting subtle chest vibrations caused by heartbeat, breathing, and body movements, as well as in assessing vibrations in buildings and infrastructure. Utilizing radar data cubes that capture target ranges and angles, millimeter-wave sensors can precisely measure and analyze a variety of vibrations. To fully leverage their capabilities, advanced techniques in stochastic analysis and machine learning are essential. Major research challenges include optimizing radio wave propagation, refining antenna array configurations, and improving signal processing methods. Current practical applications under investigation include healthcare and medical diagnostics, structural health monitoring, and predictive maintenance for buildings, infrastructure, and industrial equipment. Additionally, integrating millimeter-wave sensors with 5G communication systems offers exciting possibilities for future sensing technologies. |
