[Invited Talk] Variable-focus optical lens using ultrasound

(in English) In conventional camera modules, adjusting the focal point necessitates controlling the position of optical lenses along the optical axis through mechanical actuators, resulting in an increase in the number of components and the total size of the module. In this report, ultrasonic variable-focus lenses are introduced, which have the capacity to control their focal point through alterations of the lens profile or the refractive index by acoustic radiation force. The report specifically discusses ultrasonic liquid lenses, which utilize a boundary between two liquids with different refractive indices as a lens; ultrasonic gel lenses, which use viscoelastic transparent gel; and ultrasonic liquid crystal lenses, which use liquid crystal materials. The control of the lens profile and the refractive index distribution is achieved through the utilization of resonant vibration modes generated by piezoelectric elements and acoustic radiation force acting on the lens. The focal length of these lenses can be controlled by the driving amplitude, thereby realizing compact variable focus lenses that contain no mechanical moving parts.
