Regarding the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving, previous studies have suggested that shifts in attention related to human spatial representation are the underlying cause. However, our experimental results conducted in a virtual environment indicated that attentional shifts alone cannot account for the effect. To identify the causes of the dangers of talking on cell phones, we divided the driving environment into two distinct factors: (1) visual environmental changes due to the vehicle’s auto-driving and (2) active maneuvers such as steering and accelerator operation and conducted the two experiments under conditions in which participants were given only one of two factors. In both cases, we were unable to reproduce the results reported by previous studies. This result suggests that the findings of those studies may be attributable to the high workload associated with driving itself. |
