In an air-to-ground (A2G) network using a circularly orbiting unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base station that constantly moves in a circular orbit, the energy efficiency, defined as the communication capacity per unit of energy consumption, can be improved. This paper investigates an integrated network that combines an A2G network with circularly orbiting UAV base stations and an air-to-air (A2A) network, where traffic collected in the A2G network is forwarded to a fixed base station in a multi-hop manner. In order to maximize the area covered by the A2G network and to balance the traffic load on the A2A network, we propose an optimization method for the integrated network. The proposed method formulates an optimization problem with an objective function consisting of the area where no communication link is established and the variance of the traffic load in the A2A network, and solves this problem to determine the trajectory of the UAV base station. |
