The visual cortical area V4 is located in the middle of the ventral visual pathway, where visual information related to object recognition is processed. It plays a crucial role in the integration of multiple contour features and the formation of intermediate object representations. Recent research (Machida et al., eNeuro, 2024) analyzed the responses of macaque V4 neurons to natural images and showed that V4 neurons simultaneously encode multiple features of the contours in natural images. This suggests that V4 neurons prefer complex contours that cannot be expressed by the traditional combination of single curvature and orientation. In this study, an image generation framework using a genetic algorithm (Ponce et al., Cell, 2019) and model neurons (Bashivan et al., Science, 2019) was used to estimate the optimal contour stimuli. By dividing the estimated optimal contour based on curvature and combining the divided contours as input to the model, it was found that the model's response increased by the number of combined contours. This result suggests that V4 neurons encode complex contour patterns represented by combinations of multiple curvatures. |
