Proposal and Evaluation of Lossy Compression for Point Cloud Data

(in English) Compression methods for point cloud data observed in the real world are being researched. Point cloud data tends to generate massive amounts of information. Therefore, efficient lossless compression methods have been standardized. In this manuscript, we propose lossy compression methods for point clouds. In particular, we also focus on the use of the ball-pivoting algorithm (BPA) when creating mesh data. BPA is a widely used technique for creating meshes from point clouds, and by applying its characteristics to compression, efficient data reduction can be expected. Furthermore, the evaluation of the proposed method is verified from two perspectives of compression ratio and subjective evaluation.
