In a public blockchain, such as Bitcoin, the economically rational behavior of participants should contribute to the security of the system as a whole, i.e., it should be incentive compatible.
Bitcoin employs a protocol called Compact Block Relay for block propagation, which operates in two modes: a low-bandwidth mode with reduced transmission volume but relatively lower speed, and a high-bandwidth mode with increased transmission volume and higher speed. From a security perspective, expanding the use of the high-bandwidth mode is desirable for the Bitcoin network. However, using the high-bandwidth mode incurs additional transmission costs for each miner, raising the question of whether it is incentive-compatible.
In this study, we investigated the impact of Compact Block Relay mode selection on each miner's revenue by simulation. Our simulation results showed that miners experience increased revenue when using the high-bandwidth mode to receive blocks. However, they incur losses when sending blocks in this mode, as the increased traffic does not lead to additional revenue.
This leads to the conclusion that, while the Bitcoin network benefits from miners adopting the high-bandwidth mode, individual miners have no incentive to do so, highlighting a shortcoming in Bitcoin’s incentive design. |
