Detection of Voluntary Attention Shifts Using Criticality and Network Analyses in EEG

(in English) Visual attention is the function that selects information to be processed preferentially from the vast amount of visual information, and it is broadly classified into exogenous attention and endogenous attention based on the presence or absence of external stimuli. Furthermore, endogenous attention, particularly when directed voluntarily without any external instruction, is referred to as voluntary attention. This study analyzed the EEG dynamics during voluntary attention shifts. Specifically, it examined the state changes of neural avalanches, the firing propagation and mutual information between multiple electrodes. In the brain, neural cells transmit signals through firing, and a phenomenon known as neural avalanches occurs. The distribution of the duration and magnitude of neural avalanches follows a power-law, and the change in its exponent (critical exponent) reflects changes in neural activity and information transmission. In this study, we analyzed the changes in the critical exponent of the duration and magnitude of neural avalanches expressed in EEG during voluntary attention shifts. As a result, it was found that the critical exponent significantly increased about 1 second before the attention shift. This suggests that, about 1 second before the attention shift, the firing mode changed, and meaningful information transmission occurred. Additionally, analysis of firing propagation and mutual information showed that, about 1 second before the attention shift, information transmission was temporarily enhanced, followed by suppression afterward. These results suggest that the preparation and instruction right before the attention shift are associated with significant information transmission.
