(in English) As our modern life relies heavily on smartphones and other digital devices, many older adults face social isolation due to their unfamiliarity with such technologies. Whereas local governments and companies tackle this digital divide by providing various educational support, we further argue the importance of each older adult proactively considering how they can integrate such knowledge and technology into their everyday activity. Standing on this view, the authors established the smartphone club in Fujimino City, Saitama, Japan, encouraging older adults to find their own ways of utilising smartphones and communicating with others. This paper will investigate how this club activity influenced its participants’ behaviour toward digital technology through qualitative research and suggest several crucial factors for designing digital utilisation support for older adults.
