Color Image Enhancement Method Based on Convex Combination Coefficients Transformation Using CIELAB Color Space

(in English) The HSV color space is generally used for color image enhancement. However, since the HSV color space does not take into account human visual perception, it is difficult to perform appropriate intensity contrast enhancement. In this report, we propose a method for color image enhancement using the CIELAB color space, which is one of the uniform color space that quantitatively expresses the differences in colors perceived by humans. A pixel in a image is represented by a convex combination in the CIELAB color space, defining four components: white, black, high intensity pure color, and low intensity pure color. The image intensity contrast and saturation are enhanced by transforming the histogram of the coefficients corresponding to each component so that it approaches the target histogram calculated from the uniform distribution in the CIELAB color space.
