Recently, we proposed a framework and a rule-based selection method for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithm selection, designed to identify suitable algorithms based on application scenarios, traffic patterns, and network conditions in order to maintain application demands without compromising QoS in next-generation networks. However, network conditions are dynamic and can deteriorate due to factors such as congestion, interference, or hardware issues. Therefore, a mechanism for dynamically switching PQC algorithms while maintaining both security and QoS as network conditions change is required. This paper proposes a dynamic switching of PQC algorithm when network conditions are considered unstable in such a way that the performance of the network and the application may be affected adversely. Specifically, we adopt a model that uses a lightweight monitoring agent that constantly checks for any changes in the network conditions. To determine when the network condition deteriorates or congested the application QoS performance changes, the monitoring agent sends a ping at a predetermined interval to the communicating parties which is used to continuously collect critical network metrics such as latency, throughput, jitter, and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), etc. Thereafter, the collected network metrics are used to build a decision-making model based on a weighted sum approach and calculate network score. A PQC algorithm switching process is triggered when the score exceeds a predefined threshold. It is expected that the PQC algorithm switching latency should not have any negative impact on the application QoS performance. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through experiments using a client-server system. The evaluation results highlight that the proposal is capable of real-time accurate detection of network condition changes with 86% detection rate. |
