In this study, we propose and quantitatively evaluate a method for strategically deploying deception in Active Directory (AD) environments. Using the network simulator CyberBattleSim, we implemented multiple deception strategies and tested them against various attack models, including reinforcement learning. Our findings show that well-placed deceptions can delay and mislead adversarial actions, resulting in a drop in cumulative rewards for attacking agents. This research demonstrates the effectiveness of deception in AD settings, emphasizing that the number, placement, and types of deceptions are key factors influencing attacker behavior. In particular, these results highlight the importance of carefully orchestrating deception assets for maximum impact. By systematically measuring these elements, we gained insights into deterring or redirecting malicious activity. Moreover, our approach provides a practical foundation for visualizing attacker behavior patterns and identifying system vulnerabilities, thereby assisting security professionals in devising stronger defense strategies. Looking ahead, we plan to extend this framework to other simulation platforms and real operational settings for broader analysis. Through these efforts, we aim to further refine how cyber defenders can leverage deception. Ultimately, this study seeks to bridge research and practice in more effective cyber defense. |
