In antenna feed circuits, circular polarizers are known as waveguide components that convert linearly polarized waves into circularly polarized waves. Those made of circular waveguides are easy to connect to circular horn antennas, but compared to those made of square waveguides, they have a problem that it is difficult to obtain good characteristics because the cutoff frequency of higher modes is low.
Therefore, we propose a new configuration for a circular polarizer consisting of a circular waveguide, assuming the use of a 3D printer, with the aim of improving its characteristics. It has a ridge whose width changes periodically in the tube axial direction and aims to improve the axial ratio by reducing the difference in the reflection characteristics of the orthogonal linearly polarized waves.
Here, we report on the evaluation and verification of the proposed circular polarizer using a prototype. The design target is two frequency bands for satellite communications. A metal 3D printer (aluminum alloy) was used for the prototype. Measurement results showed that a reflection of 20 dB and an axial ratio of 0.6 dB were obtained in the two frequency bands, confirming the usefulness of the proposed configuration. |
