As the energy sector undergoes a green transformation, energy storage systems (ESSs) play a vital role. This study presents a novel approach to designing optimal and safe ESS for managing power fluctuations in renewable energy-based power systems. As the energy sector transitions towards greener solutions, integrating renewable energy sources (RESs) with energy storage plays a critical role in ensuring a reliable and low-carbon energy supply. However, the intermittency of RESs and seasonal variations in power demand creates challenges in maintaining system stability. This paper proposes a linear programming-based mathematical model to determine the optimal sizing of ESS, ensuring that storage capacities remain within safe operational limits and preventing overcharging and over-discharging. The design is validated using real power generation and consumption data from a smart home environment (iHouse), considering four distinct seasons: summer, winter, spring, and autumn. The results demonstrate that the proposed storage design offers a robust solution to mitigate the effects of power fluctuations, reducing the necessary storage size even under varying power load conditions. This approach ensures the safety of the power system, maintaining efficient operation with renewable energy sources while optimizing the required storage capacity. |
