| 抄録 | （和） | 1984年にSun Microsystemsが提唱した「The Network is the Computer」は、スタンドアロン型コンピュータからネットワークを軸とした分散コンピューティングへの移行を示唆し、情報共有やコラボレーションの重要性を強調する先見的なスローガンである。情報通信技術が飛躍的に進化し、応用範囲が格段に広がった現在においても、半世紀近く経つこの理念に対する「決定的な解」はまだ見いだせていない。 現在、ビジネスモデルとソフトウェア技術への集中が続く一方で、オープンテクノロジーの普及に伴い、垂直統合型の内製ハードウェア開発が加速している。これは、従来のソフトウェア中心・サービス中心の枠組みを大きく変えるパラダイムシフトであり、性能向上や差別化を狙う「ゲームチェンジ」の一端である。巨大テック企業はGoogleのTPUやAmazonのGravitonなどの独自設計に巨額の投資を行い、「ゲームメーカー」として自前のプラットフォームを創造し、各市場のリードを試みている。 大学や小規模な研究組織がこれらに正面から対抗するのは容易ではないが、FPGA（Field Programmable Gate Array）は、通信を含む分散型システムの設計において柔軟性と高い並列性能を実現し得る有力な手段である。本講演では、FPGAによるリアルタイム処理や低遅延通信の研究事例を示しながら、「The Network is the Computer」を再考するとともに、FPGAを中心とした実装の可能性を探究する。 |
| （英） | The slogan “The Network is the Computer,” proposed by Sun Microsystems in 1984, was a visionary phrase that suggested a shift from standalone computers to network-centric distributed computing. It emphasized the importance of information sharing and collaboration. Even now, nearly half a century later, as information and communication technology has advanced dramatically and its applications have expanded significantly, a definitive realization of this vision has yet to be achieved. Today, while focus continues on business models and software technologies, the spread of open technologies has accelerated the development of vertically integrated in-house hardware. This marks a paradigm shift that significantly alters conventional software and service-centric frameworks and represents part of a game-changing move aimed at performance improvements and differentiation. Major tech companies are heavily investing in proprietary designs, such as Google’s TPU and Amazon’s Graviton, to create their own platforms as "game makers" and attempt to lead in various markets. Although it is not easy for universities and small research organizations to compete head-on with these giants, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) offer a promising means of achieving flexibility and high parallel performance in the design of distributed systems, including communications. This talk will revisit the meaning of “The Network is the Computer” by presenting research examples of real-time processing and low-latency communication using FPGAs, and explore the potential of FPGA-centric implementations. |
