Automatic Reconstruction of Panoramic X-ray Images Using CT Images

(in English) Panoramic X-ray imaging is a common diagnostic method in dentistry and is useful for diagnosing various conditions affecting the periodontal tissues and jawbone. Training high-accuracy AI models requires a comprehensive dataset, but large-scale data acquisition is difficult due to imaging costs. Therefore, synthesized panoramic X-ray images using CT scans have attracted attention as a computational data augmentation method. In this study, we propose a panoramic X-ray image synthesis method based on elliptical dental arch extraction and projection calculation with a dynamic rotation center. The proposed method implements tilt correction with respect to the horizontal reference plane and slice selection for image synthesis, which were not included in existing methods. Experimental results using CT images from 321 patients showed that the synthesized panoramic X-ray images achieved an SSIM of 0.644, surpassing the similarity of existing methods.
