In recent years, many accidents have occurred due to aging infrastructure. Among aging infrastructures, the condition of underground facilities is not easily visible, so it is desirable to communicate and monitor them from underground. There are several means to achieve this, however this study focuses on underground wireless communications. Compared with terrestrial wireless communication, underground wireless communication has many problems. For example, large path loss occurs in soil propagation paths where rocks, sand, and clay are mixed and moisture is present. In addition, batteries are difficult to replace, and solar panels cannot be installed, so energy supply is also an issue. Therefore, five main communication technologies (electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves, magnetic induction, mud pulse telemetry, and visible light) have been applied, depending on the target, the installation depth of the communication device, and the communication distance. This paper introduces the application cases of underground wireless communication and the features and challenges of the communication technology, mainly based on two survey papers published in 2023. |
