Effects of display format and speed on selection in incremental presentation of image choices

(in English) Dark Patterns exist in selection interfaces that appear fair at first glance but actually guide user choices through differences in display style and timing. On the web, when displaying images with large file sizes relative to network bandwidth, two major display styles can be observed: one where images are displayed gradually from top to bottom (stepwise display), and another where the entire image appears from the beginning but its resolution improves over time (progressive display). In our previous work, we focused on the stepwise display format and investigated the influence of differences in image loading speed when presenting multiple images simultaneously. We found that images that appeared faster were more likely to be selected by users. In this paper, we focus on the other format, the progressive display of image resolution, and examine its influence on user selection. The experimental results showed that, similar to the findings for stepwise display, options that became clear faster than others were more likely to be selected.
