The uncanny valley is a phenomenon in which a robot's likability increases as it possesses human-like characteristics, but decreases when its characteristics become too similar to those of humans. However, recent research has reported that the uncanny valley may also occur in non-living organisms beyond robots. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether the difficulty of categorization induces a sense of eeriness in non-living objects, based on category uncertainty theory. The results showed that stimuli that were difficult to categorise showed lower likability. On the other hand, results differed from previous studies, such as the stimuli that were most difficult to categorise did not coincide with the one that received the lowest likability ratings. This suggests that the decrease in likability associated with the uncanny valley phenomenon is not due to a single factor, and that multiple hypotheses need to be considered in combination. |
