University students' Internet dependency and its related factors -- Focusing on media usage behaviors and personal characteristics by genders --

(in English) This study aims to clarify how university students’ media use behaviors and personal characteristics are related to Internet addiction. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 369 university students between June and July 2019. The analysis yielded the following findings: (1) Critical thinking effectively reduced Internet addiction among male and female students. (2) Although women showed higher levels of sharing and empathy toward negative emotions, a positive association between these traits and Internet addiction was observed only in men. (3) Only among male students was the mother's education level a protective factor against Internet addiction. (4) While men reported higher Internet operation skills, a positive association between these skills and Internet addiction was found only in women. These results suggest that multiple factors need to be considered in efforts to reduce Internet addiction among university students.
