In recent years, with the development of metaverse technologies, opportunities for users in remote locations to gather in the same virtual space and communicate with each other have been increasing. However, the animations of other users' avatars in such virtual spaces do not always accurately reflect their actual situations or behaviors, which can cause a sense of mismatch. In this study, we focused on group walking scenarios where multiple users perform the same action, and aimed to examine the influence of differences in walking animations between a user and surrounding avatars on the user's sense of co-agency. To achieve this, we developed a system that controls the walking animations of other avatars based on the user's walking behavior. In the experiment, participants experienced group walking with avatars, and we conducted a subjective evaluation by comparing conditions where the walking cycles and timings of the avatars were synchronized with the user, and conditions where they were not. The results showed that synchronizing the walking animations of avatars—especially those located closest to the user—significantly improved the user's sense of presence and co-agency. |
