Data Center Network (DC-NW) is a network for providing various applications such as cloud services, IoT, and AI. It is known that flows generated in DC-NWs have different characteristics from flows distributed in conventional networks, and congestion and packet loss caused by these characteristics are issues to be solved to improve application quality. One of them is that congestion is easily to occur by a long and large flow called elephant flow, which consumes a large amount of link bandwidth by itself. So, many traffic load balancing methods have been proposed to avoid such congestion in DC-NWs. However, many of them require sophisticated processing for network devices such as switches and routers, and there is a problem in terms of cost to realize DC-NWs using such devices. In this paper, we propose a method to avoid congestion between end hosts that generate and receive flows. In this method, an elephant flow is first divided into subflows with different 5-tuples at the sending host. Since a relay network device selects a route by hash calculation based on 5-tuple, it is expected that subflows with different 5-tuple are distributed to different routes. Our aim is that as a result, the original elephant flow is divided into multiple paths, leading to traffic load balancing and congestion avoidance. In the evaluation of the proposed method, it was shown that the proposed method improved the deviation of the link utilization ratio by about 20% compared with the case where only the route selection based on 5-tuple was performed, and that the improved method aimed at reducing the processing load of the proposed method showed almost the same effect. |
