Fairness Improvement of a Multi-buffer Adaptive Early Packet Discarding Scheme using Programmable Data Plane

(in English) With the widespread use of the Internet, a variety of applications generate diverse types of traffic with different latency requirements. Active Queue Management (AQM) techniques have been proposed to address such latency demands. With the emergence of programmable data planes, research on AQM has become increasingly active. One AQM algorithm evaluated in P4-based networks is the Adaptive Early Packet Discarding Scheme. This algorithm keeps the queuing delay within a certain range by writing the allowable queuing time to the packet and discarding the packet when the estimated queuing time exceeds that value. However, this algorithm suffers from a fairness issue, where flows competing with multiple other flows may experience degraded per-flow fairness.
In this study, we propose Multi-Queue MTQ/QTL method which aims to improve per-flow fairness by leveraging multi-queuing. Our approach assigns packets to different queues based on whether they have experienced queueing delay. We implement the proposed method on a programmable data plane and evaluate its effectiveness through emulation using the Mininet network emulator.
