Ransomware attacks primarily inflict damage through file encryption and data exfiltration. While early detection methods for ransomware are advancing, identifying threats before the initiation of encryption remains a significant challenge. Consequently, even with prompt detection, some files may already be encrypted and unrecoverable. This study analyzes the encryption processes of ransomware, focusing on the BabyLockerKZ variant—a derivative of MedusaLocker active since 2024. Building upon our previous work in 2020 on MedusaLocker, we propose a method to detect ransomware activity promptly and recover encrypted files by exploiting vulnerabilities in the encryption process. Our findings demonstrate the potential for effective file restoration after the onset of encryption, thereby minimizing system downtime and data loss. |
