An Evaluation of Diffusion Property for SIMON Variants

(in English) In CSCML 2024, Watanabe et al. applied a neural network-based output prediction (NN) attack to a Simon variant, a family of lightweight block ciphers, and identified vulnerable structure not pointed out by previous attacks.
They also showed that the vulnerable structure is caused by the diffusion property of the round function, and formulated the propagation of the probability that a one bit of input affects the AND and XOR operations used in the round function, respectively.
However, this formulation does not take into account the nature of the operations and does not accurately represent the propagation of the difference between the AND and XOR operations when the effect is the difference.
Therefore, a formulation that takes into account the nature of the operations is needed for rigorous security evaluation.
In this study, we first obtain the differential probability of each round caused by the difference of one bit of input through simulation experiments, and show that it deviates from the formulation by Watanabe et al.
Next, we formulate the input-output difference between AND and XOR operations, and then also formulate the differential probability of the whole round of SIMON variants.
The results show that the new formulation allows for a more rigorous evaluation of the diffusion property.
However, it was found that the differential probability was biased at rounds beyond the assumptions of the formulation for weak structures caused by certain parameters, suggesting that there may be unknown vulnerable structure remaining.
