In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the non-invasive and localized stimulation of the brain for both medical treatment and diagnosis. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that induces an electric current below the stimulating coil by injecting a pulse through its windings. TMS has been used for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. According to the international guidelines, when stimulating the hand motor area, “it is preferable to align the handle of the figure-of-eight coil at approximately 45° to the parasagittal plane with the coil handle pointing postero-laterally to induce a tissue current that runs perpendicular to the motor strip in the precentral sulcus.” However, few studies have examined the electric field in the hand motor area while considering inter-individual anatomical variability, and the generalizability of existing guidelines across individuals has not been sufficiently discussed. In this study, we investigated the optimal coil orientation for stimulating the hand motor area through experimental TMS measurements in 10 participants and electromagnetic field simulations using a total of 135 realistic human head models. |
