Side-channel information leakage through cables connected to cryptographic modules poses a serious threat to security by expanding the attack surface. However, evaluating such leakage on cables can be challenging due to issues with reproducibility. One contributing factor is the connection of trigger probes. When a trigger GPIO signal is synchronized with cryptographic processing, its switching activity can introduce side-channel leakage into the I/O domain, which may then propagate through the probe into the power cable. In actual attack scenarios, trigger signals are typically not available, and thus the results obtained under such evaluation conditions may differ significantly from those of real-world attacks.
To investigate this issue, we targeted ArmFrogs-ALICE, a general-purpose industrial embedded board, for empirical measurement to examine the leakage mechanism caused by trigger signals. The results demonstrate that outputting the trigger pulse after the transient response of the cryptographic operation has settled can prevent modulation of the GPIO signal, thereby mitigating the influence of trigger probe connections on the measurement results. |
