Transition Characteristics of Arc Roots of Break Arcs from Electrical Contacts to a Same-Potential Electrode
Ryota Miyazaki, Junya Sekikawa (Shizuoka Univ.) EMD2025-1
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Break arcs were generated during the separation at constant speed of electrical contacts in a resistive DC circuit with a supply voltage of 300 V and a circuit current of 10 A when the contacts were contacted. A same-potential electrode, short-circuited to a fixed contact, was spatially separated. The break arcs were driven by magnetic blowing-out, causing arc spots to transition from the electrical contact to the same-potential electrode P. The polarity of electrode P was set as either cathode or anode, and its height z relative to the contact was varied at 5 mm, 7 mm, and 9 mm. The magnetic flux density B used for magnetic blowing-out was 30 mT. The voltage and current waveforms of the break arcs, as well as the transition characteristics of the break arcs observed by high-speed cameras, were investigated, yielding the following results. When the electrode P was connected to the cathode, the break arcs were lengthened avoiding the P, and the transition of the cathode spots from the contact to the electrode P became difficult. Under conditions where the P was close to the electrical contacts and the magnetic flux density of the transverse magnetic field was high, the cathode spots transitioned unstably to the P. When the P was connected to the anode, the anode spots transitioned stably, being attracted toward the P regardless of the distance from the contacts or the magnetic flux density.
