Propagating radio waves are widely used to precisely observe distant objects. A maximum likelihood estimator is often used for those observations that require accuracy, due to its consistency and asymptotic efficiency. In fact, the maximum likelihood estimator of time of flight was analytically derived since early on. Here, we analyze an idealized maximum likelihood estimator of the Doppler frequency shift experienced by propagating waves. The resulting expression provides clear guidelines for the level of accuracy required for a given observation. |
