NTT Space Environment Energy Laboratories is conducting research and development on optical wireless power transmission using lasers. They are focusing particularly on enabling power transmission to mobile objects, such as drones and HAPS (high-altitude platform stations). Specifically, the goal is to enable applications such as power transmission to HAPS, which, like free space optics (FSO), requires precise laser transmission over long distances. Additionally, for safety and high-efficiency power generation, the system requires a high-precision tracking and direction control system. Furthermore, for energy transmission, an optical system that can control lasers with high output ($>$ kW) over long distances ($>$ tens of kilometers) with high precision is necessary. This differs from FSO requirements. This paper presents the results of optical system design and ground experiments targeting long-distance energy transmission. |
