Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wireless medical telemeters are classified as specific low-power radio stations and enable the transmission of various patient vital signs without requiring a license. Due to their high convenience, their use has been rapidly expanding in recent years. Although wireless medical telemeters utilize a dedicated frequency band (420–450 MHz), issues such as radio interference and reception failure have been increasingly reported. Preventing such communication problems is a significant challenge from the perspective of medical safety. This tutorial introduces a method focusing on the electric field strength radiated from wireless medical telemeter transmitters. The spatial propagation characteristics, considering reflections and absorptions caused by hospital structures such as walls and floors, were simulated using the FDTD method. The validity and effectiveness of the simulation were evaluated by comparison with actual measurement results. In addition, we examine the leakage of electromagnetic fields outside of emergency vehicles such as ambulances and helicopter emergency medical services when patients are transported while wearing wireless medical telemeters. Based on these findings, a comprehensive explanation of a risk assessment method for potential interference with telemeters in other medical facilities is provided.
