Activities of integrated management with AI in User-centric RAN

For Beyond 5G/6G, the ITU-R IMT-2030 framework has identified new use cases such as “Ubiquitous Connectivity” and “AI and Communication.”. To realize stable communications in RAN (Radio Access Network) for the new use cases, the authors have studied "User-centric RAN" to realize the stabilized communication quality through the establishment of user-centric areas. The main technology in User-centric RAN is Cell-Free massive MIMO, which uses radio signal processing via the coordination of multiple base stations. However, ensuring the stabilized communication quality necessities integrated management that consider various parameters including radio link quality, communication requirements for each user, and the utilization of radio and computing resources in RAN. For example, there is AP (Access Point) clustering technology to reduce the radio signal processing load of Cell-Free massive MIMO. This process involves the selection of optimally necessary APs, determined by many parameters such as the radio link quality between each AP and terminal and the communication quality required by the user. It is challenging to realize an integrated management method with more parameters by the optimization problem. We are studying the potential of utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the optimized integrated management method. This paper presents our activities on the application of AI integrated management with User-centric RAN. Additionally, the status of our outcomes, including evaluations conducted on the actual prototype. |
