IoT Device Fingerprinting Using Initial DNS Queries

(in English) In recent years, the widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT), which connects a diverse range of devices to networks, has brought benefits to society.
On the other hand, the risk of information leakage and unintended behavior from IoT devices has also increased.
To ensure secure communication, it is essential to identify the devices on a network, which requires device identification techniques that can classify them based on their characteristics.
Although methods utilizing traffic data from IoT devices were proposed, acquiring the necessary data is time-consuming because these devices do not communicate continuously, and the time required for identification is inconsistent.
This paper proposes a device identification method that does not require lengthy data acquisition by focusing on the DNS queries that IoT devices issue immediately after connecting to a network.
When an IoT device connects to a network, it communicates with specific cloud servers as part of its initial operation, and the domains it contacts are characteristic of each device.
In this paper, by leveraging this trait, we propose an identification devices method using only a short period of data collected immediately after network connection.
The results of identification using experimental data show that an accuracy of 99% at the vendor level and 87% at the device name level can be achieved within 60seconds.
