Silence Periods and User Group Analysis of Mental Health-Related Emotional Patterns on Reddit

(in English) Recent research has increasingly explored psychological patterns in online communities, focusing on linguistic indicators of mental health such as sentiment expression and depressive language. However, little attention has been paid to posting inactivity—referred to as silence periods—which may carry important emotional and behavioral changes. In this study, we investigate how silence periods relate to emotional dynamics among Reddit users. Using a large-scale dataset covering positive, neutral, and negative subreddits, we propose a two-level analytical framework that captures both short-term emotional shifts and long-term trends in user behavior. Our findings show that longer silence periods are associated with greater sentiment drops and increased switching to negative communities. Moreover, users with persistent long silences tend to show progressively worse sentiment upon re-engagement. These results highlight silence as a meaningful behavioral signal and suggest its potential value for real-time mental health monitoring on social platforms.
