Crickets possess an auditory feature detection circuit capable of distinguishing species-specific pulse intervals, and the neural responses of this circuit have been recorded in detail. Previous studies have demonstrated that modeling such neural circuits and optimizing their parameters enables successful replication, with potential applications in neural prosthesis. However, these studies have been limited to software-based simulations and have not addressed hardware implementation or validation. In this study, we develop a system that mimics the cricket’s auditory feature detection mechanism and reproduces its function on an FPGA. A neural circuit model based on the Izhikevich neuron model is implemented on the FPGA, and external control is used to optimize the neuron parameters such that the neural responses match experimentally measured data from the cricket’s auditory circuit. The implemented system successfully reproduces selective responses similar to those of the biological neural network. These results demonstrate the validity of the proposed system and the feasibility of mimicking biological neural networks using FPGA. |
