Over the past decade, to meet the ever-increasing bandwidth demands driven by the rapid increase of high-definition video services, the combination of coherent optical transmission technology and pluggable transceivers has delivered low-power, compact solutions for primarily metro-distance and longer-reach traffic. Since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, however, the explosive growth of generative AI has concentrated on new bandwidth requirements within data-center networks under 2 km, where intensity-modulation direct-detection (IMDD) schemes—offering lower power consumption than coherent approaches—have been adopted. Yet when aggregate capacities exceed 1.6 Tbit/s, IMDD suffers pronounced performance degradation due to waveform distortions such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), making it impossible to extend reach; as a result, coherent techniques are expected even for short-reach links. In this report, we examine the standardization of 1.6 Tbit/s-class coherent systems and review the latest conference findings on IMDD, evaluate the architectures and their power consumption at both 1.6 Tbit/s and 3.2 Tbit/s across different link distances, and discuss the appropriate delineation between IMDD and coherent approaches. |
