(in English) We are conducting integrated research and development aimed at realizing the commercialization of High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPSs) in Japan, encompassing demonstration trials, equipment development, and system-level simulations. In February 2025, we successfully conducted a communication trial in Kenya using a HAPS operating in the stratosphere at an altitude of approximately 20 km, and domestic demonstration trials in Japan are now being planned. In the initial phase of HAPS system deployment, key challenges include rain and cloud attenuation in the Q-band feeder link and site constraints for ground gateways (GWs). In the service link, there are also concerns about inter-system interference arising from spectrum sharing with terrestrial mobile networks. To address these issues, we are studying system configurations aimed at improving feeder link availability, developing compact GWs, and designing a regenerative payload system utilizing the band 34 / n34 spectrum, which remains unused in Japan. This presentation provides an overview of these initiatives and reports on the current progress and future plans.
