[Invited Lecture] Research and Development of Edge Cloud Enhancement Technology for Next-Generation Communications and Contribution to O-RAN

(in English) This talk will introduce Rakuten Mobile's advanced edge cloud technologies and their social implementation for the Beyond 5G/6G era. Rakuten Mobile has built the "world's first end-to-end fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network," maximizing cost efficiency and operational speed. This presentation will focus on the progress and achievements of our R&D project, "Advanced Edge Cloud Technologies for Next-Generation Communications," selected under the NICT "Strategic Program for Social Implementation and Global Expansion." The project received the highest "S" rating in the FY2024 stage- gate evaluation and is significantly ahead of schedule in feature development. We aim for efficient and highly reliable operations under resource constraints through enhanced edge data fabric functions, optimized edge platforms, and integrated container/VM operations. Notably, we are strengthening international standardization. Our domestic-first deployment of AI-powered RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) in a large-scale Open RAN commercial network aims to reduce network power consumption by approximately 20% with nationwide deployment by 2025. This is also a result of multiple NICT R&D projects. This talk will present these specific R&D efforts, their sequential social implementation starting in 2025, and our outlook toward 6G.
