(in English) In next-generation communication systems, the use of millimeter-wave bands is considered crucial for achieving high-capacity and high-speed transmission. However, when metallic waveguides such as microstrip lines are used in the millimeter-wave band, conductor loss increases due to the surface roughness of the conductors, leading to greater transmission loss. Additionally, these structures require high manufacturing precision and incur significant fabrication costs. As a result, efficient antenna integration remains a major challenge.Dielectric waveguides, on the other hand, are less affected by metal-related losses and can achieve low-loss transmission in the millimeter-wave band. Furthermore, leaky-wave antennas that utilize dielectric waveguides are attracting attention for their ability to achieve relatively low loss and high gain.
This paper reports on leaky-wave antennas that integrate dielectric waveguides and antennas, specifically focusing on designs using photonic crystals and dielectric image lines.
