Relationship Analysis Between Bicycle Violations and Personal Characteristics in Japanese Traffic Rules

(in English) In this paper, we analyze the relationship between violations and personal characteristics with the aim of gaining insights that can be applied to bicycle violation prevention measures and systems. An online questionnaire is used to assess violations and measure personal characteristics. To ensure objective violation assessment, respondents are asked to answer
questions about their knowledge of rules from two perspectives: their usual behavior and their understanding of rules. Violators and compliers are distinguished based on the number of correct answers. Personal characteristics are measured using the Big Five factors (extroversion, neuroticism, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) and three additional scales: Numeracy, consideration of future consequences (CFC), and need for uniqueness (NFU). Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between violations and personal characteristics. The analysis showed that numeracy
was consistently associated with violations, while diligence and openness were not. These results suggest the potential for developing effective violation prevention methods targeting the identified personal characteristics and applying them to roadside electronic signage and other guidance systems.
